SUPER HERO THEME FOR PRE-SCHOOL
TITLE: “WHERE IS OUR SUPER HERO?
SUMMARY
OF LESSONS
These lesson plans for the Super Hero Theme
is meant for the entire school year from
September to beginning of June. This
theme covers the Bible Book of "Matthew"
with a "Take Home Activity Page" for the
parents. It is a look at "Jesus" from
birth to death on the cross as "being a
Super Hero" in the eyes of the children.
The children will compare other "super
heroes" to Jesus and discover that "Jesus,
our Super Hero" is by our side every day,
every minute. The material is divided
into preschool lessons for ages 3-6 and the
grade school lessons for ages 7-12.
********SEPTEMBER
LESSONS********
LESSON ONE – “WHO IS A SUPER HERO?”
In this
lesson, the children will understand the
qualities of a “super hero”, like being
strong, having special powers, being
confident, being brave and saving others.
They will determine that Jesus had these
qualities and can be their “Super Hero”!
They will play a game called “Where is
Jesus, Our Super Hero” and color a Super
Hero picture.
LESSON TWO – “A SUPER HERO FAMILY TREE”
In
this lesson, the children will begin their
study of the Bible Book of “Matthew”. They
will learn in Matthew 1, the disciple
Matthew wrote about the family tree of
Jesus, our Super Hero and how He was born.
They will know that God was the father of
Jesus, but that Mary and Joseph were the
earthly parents. They will understand how
special the birth of Jesus was, and how
Jesus can be the Super Hero of their life.
The preschool children will play a game “Put
Baby Jesus on the Family Tree”. The grade
school children will take the names of the
family of “Jesus” and form a family tree on
the floor.
LESSON THREE – “AN ENEMY AFTER OUR SUPER
HERO!”
This lesson will
cover Matthew 2: 1-23 showing the children
that God protected His one and only Son,
Jesus from an enemy, King Herod. God
sent an angel to tell Mary and Joseph to
travel to Egypt so that the enemy, King
Herod would not find them and kill Baby
Jesus. The children will learn that
they are "children of God" and that God will
protect them from their enemies. They
will play a game "Watch Out for the
Enemy".
********OCTOBER
LESSONS********
LESSON FOUR – “SIDEKICK FOR OUR SUPER HERO”
This lesson will teach the children about
“baptism” based upon Matthew 3. They will
understand that God sent “John, the
Baptist”, like a sidekick of a hero to
baptize Jesus so He could receive the “Holy
Spirit” and begin his ministry for God. The
children will perform an “experiment with
dirt (sin), water (faith) and dish soap
(Holy Spirit) to understand the power of
“baptism”.
LESSON FIVE – “A SUPER HERO BATTLE”
This lesson is based upon Matthew 4 and how
Jesus, our Super Hero battled “Satan”.
The children will know that using the power
of God’s words from the Bible will win many
battles with “sin”. With the strength of
their faith, the children will make “right
choices” and win over “sin” and become
“Knights in Christ”. The children will do a
pretend battle with Satan with a bag of
crumpled sheets of paper with words of God
written on them.
LESSON SIX – “SUPER HERO REWARDS”
In
Matthew 5:1-12, the children will know that
riches on earth will not get them into
heaven, but that their actions and heart
feelings will. Jesus, our Super Hero, tells
the children specifically how they can
receive super hero rewards from God to be
with Him in heaven. The children will play
the “Behavior and Blessing Bingo Game” with
candy M & Ms.
LESSON SEVEN – “GOOD/BAD PUMPKINS FOR OUR
SUPER HERO”
(HALLOWEEN LESSON)
This lesson will cover Matthew 5: 13-47
which will show the children how Jesus, our
Super Hero, used objects as examples of good
and bad to show the people how they should
act in pleasing God. This lesson can
be used for Halloween as a
pumpkin not carved and cleaned out represent
"bad" and a pumpkin that is cleaned out can
represent "good". The children will
learn that they need to follow God's rules
in order to please Him. The children
will be carving pumpkins in this lesson.
********NOVEMBER
LESSONS********
LESSON
EIGHT – “SUPER HERO HAND POWER”
In Matthew
6, the children will learn how to use their
hands to serve and help Jesus, our Super
Hero change people’s “sinful” lives into
“good” lives. They will use their “hand
power” to give to the needy, to pray, to use
self-control and fast, to love one another
and know that God will provide them with
their needs. They will say “The Lord’s
Prayer” and trace their hands to create
“beautiful hand power”.
LESSON NINE – “BASHING AND TATTLING ON
OTHERS”
This lesson will center
on what Jesus, our Super Hero, tells us in
Matthew 7:1-6 about judging others and the
consequences. The children will discuss and
determine what is right and wrong about
“bashing and tattling on other” children.
They will play a game called “The Blame
Game” and practice what Jesus teaches about
judging others.
LESSON TEN – “BASKETS OF FOOD” (THANKSGIVING
LESSON)
In this
lesson, the children will jump ahead to
Matthew 14:13-21 where Jesus, our Super
Hero, uses His God given power to provide
food for 5,000 people with just five loaves
of bread and two fish. The children will
compare our Thanksgiving feast with the
feast of feeding the 5,000 people. They will
be familiar with our country celebrating
their survival in their new land with the
help of the Indians, and the teamwork of
many people along with the blessings of
“God”. The children will prepare baskets of
bread with butter and vegetable trays for
the congregation to feast upon after church.
The children will use teamwork and the power
of God to provide for others as their
special “Thanksgiving Celebration”.
LESSON ELEVEN – “ASK, SEEK AND KNOCK”
In Matthew 7:7-12, Jesus, our Super Hero,
tells us to ask, seek and knock and God will
help us receive, find and have doors of
opportunity opened to us. The children will
learn how to talk with God and see that God
answers in different ways. They will play a
game called “Ask, Seek and Knock”.
********DECEMBER
LESSONS********
LESSON TWELVE – “A SUPER HERO CHRISTMAS
ESCAPADE”
The
children will be assigned parts in a short
Christmas Play to be presented to the
church. Therefore, the next three lessons
are devoted to “practice” and “Christmas
activities”, such as making gifts for
others, coloring pages of the Christmas
story, singing Christmas songs and coloring
their favorite “super hero” pictures.
However, if you choose not to do this
“Christmas Program”, you may substitute any
lessons or activities you wish to do.
LESSON THIRTEEN – “A SUPER HERO CHRISTMAS
ESCAPADE”
The children will practice their parts in
“WHAT WOULD OUR SUPER HEROES SAY ABOUT
JESUS?” Ask the children to bring their
“costumes” for their favorite super hero.
Then, ask and write down “what their Super
Hero would say about the birth of Jesus”.
The Christmas story will be reviewed in
Matthew 1:18-24 and Matthew 2.
LESSON FOURTEEN – “A SUPER HERO CHRISTMAS
ESCAPADE”
The
children will continue to practice the short
“play” while the others color the “Christmas
Story” coloring book. The teacher can put on
a CD of Christmas songs for preschoolers to
learn. The teacher can finish the “Christmas
story” and help the children make some book
markers as gifts to give to others.
CHRISTMAS PROGRAM PRESENTATION FOR THE
SUNDAY SCHOOL
On Christmas Day Celebration, have the
children present their short “play” and song
to the church. Make sure your church has
given you about 10-15 minutes in the
program. There will not be any Sunday School
lesson on this date.
********JANUARY
LESSONS********
LESSON
FIFTEEN – “SUPER HERO CODE MESSAGES”
In
this lesson, the children will discover that
the words of Jesus, our Super Hero, in
Matthew 7:13-29 are “codes” that we need to
live by and practice in our obedience to our
God. The children will understand that
living God’s way is like a narrow path and
not easy to follow. They will also know that
living God’s way will bring about good fruit
and not rotten fruit. They need to practice
living by God’s “codes” and be a “wise
builder” whose house will weather all the
storms of life. They will perform a science
experiment with “sand” and a “rock”.
LESSON SIXTEEN – “SUPER HERO HEALING POWER”
In Matthew
8:1-17, the children will be able to tell
how Jesus healed a man with leprosy, a
centurion’s servant, Peter’s mother-in-law
and others. They will know that this
“healing power” came from God and that those
“healed needed to have “trust and belief” in
God before they were healed. They will play
the “Trust and Believe” game.
LESSON SEVENTEEN – “SUPER HERO POWERS OVER
NATURE”
The purpose of this lesson is to teach the
children about “how Jesus, our Super Hero,
had control over “nature”. The children will
be able to tell and draw the Bible story of
“Jesus calms the storm on the sea” according
to Matthew 8:23-27. They will recognize that
Jesus was the “son of God” and had super
hero powers. They will know that their
belief and trust in Jesus will also calm the
“storms” in their daily lives.
LESSON EIGHTEEN – “SUPER HERO POWERS OVER
DEMONS”
In Matthew
8:28-34, Jesus, our Super Hero, had the
power to cast “demons” out of people with
just a few words. The children will
understand that Jesus did not “judge” the
person who was possessed by a “demon”, but
rather “saved” that person. Jesus teaches us
that we cannot “judge” each person by their
outward “appearance”. The children will
understand that each person is “special” to
God and that God sent “Jesus”, His Son to
save each and every one of us. The children
will make a “love gift of a flower” for the
ones they love as a reminder of the love
that God has for us. This lesson can be used
as a “Valentine’s Day” celebration for the
children.
********FEBRUARY
LESSONS********
LESSON NINETEEN – “SUPER HERO MISSIONS”
In
this lesson, the children will have a
partner and complete a “MISSION CARD” by
reading various Bible passages in Matthew 9.
They will then use the “magnetic white
board” to tell the Bible story to the rest
of the children. The children will
understand that God has a “mission for each
of them” and understand that Jesus, our
Super Hero, had a “special mission” from God
to complete.
LESSON TWENTY – “SIDEKICKS GO AND TELL THE
WORLD”
In
Matthew 10:1-16, the children will be able
to know and/or recognize the names of the
twelve disciples of Jesus. They will
understand that these twelve men were
“sidekicks” for Jesus, our Super Hero. They
will understand how these “sidekicks” were
to go and tell the “world” about Jesus, the
Son of God. The children will know that we
must become like “sidekicks” for Jesus and
go “fishing” for others to tell them about
“Jesus”.
LESSON TWENTY-ONE – “SUPER HERO WARNINGS”
In
Matthew 10:17-42, Jesus, our Super Hero,
gives seven special warnings to each of us.
The children will make “signs” for each of
these warnings and understand that their
belief in God can bring about struggles in
their lives. Jesus gives us warnings, but
also reassures us that we should not fear,
but rather let the “Spirit of God” prevail
within us and all hardships will be
conquered.
LESSON TWENTY-TWO – “WAS JOHN, THE BAPTIST,
A HERO?”
In Matthew
11:1-19, the children will be able to tell
how John, the Baptist was a “hero” in the
eyes of Jesus, our Super Hero. They will be
able to tell how John endured “hardships”
for his belief in Jesus as our Savior. The
children will play the “Pass My Word” game.
********MARCH LESSONS*********
LESSON TWENTY-THREE – “JESUS, SUPER HERO OF
THE SABBATH”
The purpose of this lesson is to show the
children how important the Sabbath Day is to
God. In Matthew 12:1-14, Jesus, our Super
Hero, had to show the people what God wanted
them to do on the Sabbath Day. The children
will be able to decide hat man-made laws
about the Sabbath are not as important as
God-made laws. God made the Sabbath a day of
rest and praising His name. The children
will play “Breaking the Rules” game.
LESSON TWENTY-FOUR – “JESUS, A CHOSEN
SERVANT OF GOD”
In
Matthew 12:15-21, the children will learn
how God told His people that He would send
someone to bring compassion, healing and
forgiveness to all the people of the world.
The children will know that Jesus was the
son of God who brought hope and peace to all
nations. They will practice being like
Jesus, our Super Hero, a chosen servant of
God by responding to some “Situation Cards”.
LESSON TWENTY-FIVE – “A SUPER HERO
SACRIFICES”(EASTER LESSON #1)
The children will match the picture with the
Bible stories of the events leading to the
“arrest of Jesus”, our Super Hero in Matthew
21:1-17 and Matthew 26:14-56. They will be
able to tell the story of the “Triumphal
Entry” into Jerusalem and the “anger” Jesus
had for the “den of robbers” at the temple.
They will see that Judas agreed to betray
Jesus for thirty pieces of silver,
understand “The Lord’s Supper” with the
disciples and the prediction of the “denial
of Peter”. They will learn how close Jesus
was to His Father in Heaven at “the Garden
of Gethsemane” as well as how Jesus was
arrested. The children will place their
special “Bible Story Easter Eggs” in an
“Easter basket” that they will make.
********APRIL LESSONS********
LESSON TWENTY-SIX – “A SUPER HERO ARISES”
(EASTER LESSON #2)
In
this lesson, the children will be familiar
with the Bible stories from Matthew 27:13-66
and Matthew 28:1-15. They will match the
pictures of the stories of “Jesus before
Pilate”, “The soldiers mocking Jesus”, “The
crucifixion”, “The death of Jesus”, “the
burial of Jesus”, “the guard at the tomb”,
“the resurrection” and the “Guard’s report.
They will understand the death and
resurrection of Jesus as God’s plan of
salvation to save our “sinful” selves. The
children will place their “Bible Story
Easter Eggs” in their finished “Easter
Basket” to take home.
LESSON TWENTY-SEVEN – “FOREVER BATTLING
EVIL”
In Matthew
12:22-50, the children will realize that
even Jesus, their Super Hero, was forever
battling “evil” from “behavior” to “words”.
This lesson will help the children realize
that the “words” they say to one another can
be “what is in their heart” and lead to
“evil”. They will use marbles and water in a
science experiment to show that the more
they say “evil things”, the more their heart
may become “evil”. They need to be more like
“Jesus” who used “good words” to bring about
“good fruit” in people.
LESSON TWENTY-EIGHT – “PARABLES – A FUN,
LEARNING STORY”
In
Matthew 13:1-58, Jesus, our Super Hero,
demonstrates his story telling ability by
telling parables which is a fun way to learn
lessons from God. The children will
interpret the special lesson from the six
parables that Jesus preached by using the
story board pictures and telling the story
in their own words. They will make six
“Parable Power Cards” to take home.
LESSON TWENTY-NINE – “A SUPER HERO WALKS ON
WATER”
The purpose of this lesson is to show the
children that even a “Super Hero” has the
emotions of sadness, anger and happiness and
“feels” for others. In Matthew 14:1-12,
Jesus had great sadness for the death of
John, the Baptist. In Matthew 14:22-34,
Jesus recognized the “fear” and the
“emotions” his disciples had and how little
“faith” they had. The children will learn to
give their “emotions” to God and have
“faith” that their feelings can be turned
into “happiness” when they are challenged to
do something they are not sure they can do.
They will play the “Yarn Rolling Game” to
visually see what their emotions do.
********MAY LESSONS********
LESSON THIRTY – “A SUPER HERO CLEAN UP ACT”
The
purpose of this lesson is to help the
children distinguish between “clean” and
“unclean” acts, thoughts and ideas. Jesus,
our Super Hero, stressed in Matthew 15:1-28
that the “law and faith in the words of God”
were deemed more important than “the laws
and words of man”. They will learn that the
words that come out of their mouth does show
“what is in the heart” which makes them
“clean” or “unclean”. They will practice
becoming “clean” by using a “wash cloth of
forgiveness and great faith” to become the
children of God.
LESSON THIRTY-ONE – “SUPER HERO CHALLENGES”
The purpose of this lesson is to help the
children realize the “super challenges” that
Jesus had as a “super hero”. In Matthew
16:1-28; Matthew 17:1-26 and Matthew 18:1-9,
Jesus struggles with demands of “proving who
he is” to others and finally, shows the
disciples who he is thru the
“transfiguration” and identified as “the
Messiah” from God. The children will
understand the “challenges” they too will
face in telling others about “Jesus, their
Super Hero”. With the help and strength of
God, the children will run a “Baton Relay
Race” to meet all the “challenges of being a
“super hero” like Jesus.
LESSON THIRTY-TWO – “MORE SUPER HERO
PARABLES”
In
this lesson, the children will be
interpreting more of the fun, short stories
of wisdom that Jesus, our Super Hero, used
to teach the people about God. These
parables will be matched with art clips and
told in their own words from the “Parable of
Lost Sheep” in Matthew 18:10-14; “Parable of
the Unmerciful Servant” in Matthew 18:21-35;
“Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard” in
Matthew 20:1-16; “Parable of the Two Sons”
in Matthew 21:28-45; “Parable of the Wedding
Banquet” in Matthew 22:1-14; “Parable of the
Ten Virgins” in Matthew 25:1-13; and the
“Parable of the Talents” in Matthew
25:14-30. The children will make seven more
“Parable Power Cards” to take home.
LESSON THIRTY-THREE – “SUPER HERO WOES
In
Matthew 23 and 24, Jesus was confronted with
silly, minor problems presented in such a
way as to cause grief and trouble for him.
The children will learn how to overcome “the
woes” of the world” and stay true to the way
God wants us to live. They will build a
“pyramid of woes” to help them understand
how Jesus handled these “woes”.
********JUNE LESSONS********
LESSON THIRTY-FOUR – “BAD THINGS HAPPEN EVEN
TO A SUPER HERO”
This lesson will help the children learn to
overcome the “bad things” that happen and
look toward the “good” that comes out of the
bad. They will determine the “good” that
came out of the bad things that happened to
Jesus, our Super Hero, in Matthew 26:1-5,
“the plot against Jesus”; in Matthew
25:31-46, “the sheep and the goats”; in
Matthew 27:1-10, “the death of Judas” and
the “denial of Peter” in Matthew 26:69-75,
and in Matthew 26:57-67 “Jesus answers the
High Priest”. They will make a “Wheel of
Happenings” and learn how a super hero can
overcome these happenings.
LESSON THIRTY-FIVE – “BE A SUPER HERO!”
In
this final lesson, the children will
memorize Matthew 28:16-19, the great
commission that God declares for each one of
us to do in order to be a super hero in His
eyes. Each child will determine how he/she
can be a “SUPER HERO FOR JESUS” and make
their own “commission box” to add to others
thus making a skyscraper to God. They will
be ready to receive “their KEY” to the city
of God.
LESSON THIRTY-SIX -
“SUPER HERO KEYS AND CAPES FOR OUR SUPER
HERO CHILDREN"
This will
be a program set up for those who
participated in the program. A special key
can be presented to each child along with a
cape (if possible) as they become “SUPER
HEROES FOR JESUS”. The children will have
completed a study of the Bible Book of
Matthew. THEY WILL
HAVE COMPLETED A STUDY OF THE BIBLE
BOOK OF MATTHEW.
